MEET our T3 May ATHLETE of the MONTH, Peter DeWitt!

Congratulations to Peter DeWitt on earning the T3 Athlete of the Month. It is astonishing to think of his athletic successes paired with the intensity of his travel for work. Spending nearly 40 weeks a year on the road creates a huge barrier towards adequate training. However, understanding the importance of balance in all aspects of life has allowed for, and created, a very consistent training regime that is working exceptionally well. Coach Kevin says, "One of the beautiful things about working with Peter is creating a plan that is achievable, accountable, yet still allows for growth in all disciplines." Recently Peter has been winning age-group awards in many running races, but now is really looking to reach some benchmark time goals for his 5k and half-marathon. Look for more amazing results from Peter in the future. Well deserved!

Q:  What is your name and where do you live?

A:   Peter DeWitt. Albany, NY

Q:  What is your age?

A:   55

Q:  What is your occupation?

A:   I write books on school and district leadership, and facilitate long term hybrid professional learning based on our research, with my thought partner and good friend Michael Nelson. I was a teacher for 11 years, and a principal for 8. I’ve been writing books for 13 and I also write articles, do research and write a column for Education Week.

Q:  How long have you been participating in triathlons?

A:   Less than 2 years. I did my first in August of 2024.

Q:  How long have you been coached by T3 Coaching?

A:   Been coached by Kevin since August of 2025. And it’s the best decision I’ve made in a long time.

Q:  What is your favorite race, and why?

A:   Each race I do is my favorite because I learn something new about myself every time. Last year I competed in 2 sprints, 3 Olympic and 2 70.3 distances. The Lake George 70.3 in August was great because it took place where I grew up. I was born and raised in Queensbury, and doing a 70.3 in Lake Goerge was something I never thought I would do. I placed 20th overall and 1st in my age group. I did my first Ironman 70.3 in La Quinta in December, and that was an amazing experience and challenge.

Q:  What is your favorite piece of triathlon equipment?

A:   My Cervelo P5 triathlon bike. One of the best investments I’ve made in the sport.

Q:  What are some of your career highlights as an athlete (not necessarily triathlon)?

A:   I was a long-distance runner my last year of high school and all through college. However, I took a 25-year hiatus due to injury. To be honest, I never thought I would compete again. During COVID I would stay with my mom in Queensbury because my travel stopped and everything went remote. I was a part-time caregiver and bought a bike for some respite. I would ride to Lake George and back from my childhood home in West Glens Falls. At the end of 2020, I lost my mom and then my sister Trish passed away 4 months later. They were two of the most important people in my life, my rocks and the two women who raised me after my dad passed when I was 11. I decided then to begin running again, along with my biking, to deal with grief. I ran a few half marathons, and then started swimming about 18 months ago. When I began swimming I couldn’t do 25 yards without feeling like I was going to pass out and now I’m swimming 2 miles at a time. Simply put, the career highlight is that at 55 years old, training got me through very difficult times, and I feel grateful every day that I get to do this. Now, I’m not just winning my age group in road races and a few triathlons, I’m keeping up with guys 10 to 20 years younger than me, and that feels good. I would never be able to train like this without the support of my partner Doug.

Q:  What are your triathlon goals for this season?

A:   I’m competing in US Ironman 70.3 nationals in Happy Valley in June. I’d like to go under 5 hours.

Q:  What is your long-term goal in the sport of mtn. biking/triathlon?

A:   This is a great question, and I’m not I have an answer. I take each race, whether it’s a road race, or a triathlon, one at a time. I learned from my high school coaches Bob Underwood and Pat Sweeney that when done right, training can be a lifelong commitment. They were right.

Q:  What are 3 foods someone would always find in your refrigerator/cupboards?

A:   This is where I should be healthy, right??? Peanut butter, apples, and yogurt. My partner Doug does most of the cooking!

Q:  What kind of music could we find on your playlist

A:   Everything from 80’s hairbands, to Ludovico Einaudi.

Q:  What advice would you give to a 'newbie' in the sport?

A:   You are stronger than you think you are. Road racing and triathlons aren’t necessarily about how you compete against others. It’s how you compete against your own inner voices.

Q:  Do you have any secret training tips? (Not really secret if you share, huh?)

A:   Be disciplined and flexible. I travel about 40 weeks a year, mostly to Canada, across the US and we are in Australia several times in a year. I find hotels with Pelotons, treadmills and decent pools. Kevin has been so good about helping me see that not every workout may look exactly the way I envisioned, but the key is working out consistently. Sometimes, I do more than he asks (and he tells me I listen as well as his middle school students), and other times I just can’t do as much. Let go of the self-judgement.

Q:  Please list your favorite workout:

A:   Kevin’s 555 workout is awesome. I actually find myself get excited when that pops up.

Q:  Any thoughts you want to share?

A:   Regardless of how old you are, or how fast you are, be grateful that you can train because there are so many people that can’t. There are too many people who never make it to the point that you are at right now.
