MEET our T3 April ATHLETE of the MONTH, Mike Sorrentino!

Q:  What is your name and where do you live?

A:  Mike Sorrentino, Glens Falls, NY

Q:  What is your age?

A:  18

Q:  What is your occupation?

A:  Student at SUNY Cortland and lifeguard for the Glens Falls Recreation Department during the summer.

Q:  How long have you been participating in triathlons?

A:  3 Years

Q:  How long have you been coached by T3 Coaching?

A:  2 Years

Q:  What is your favorite race, and why?

A:  Fronhofer Tool Triathlon because it's just such a fun race and almost everyone knows each other so it's basically just racing against friends and training partners. And also it was the first Olympic distance race that I ever did so it kind of means something to me.

Q:  What is your favorite piece of triathlon equipment?

A:  Definitely my new bike-Felt B16 all tricked out in Glens Falls Indians colors (red and black)

Q:  What are some of your career highlights as an athlete (not necessarily triathlon)?

A:  Member of the Glens Falls Varsity Swim Team from 2004-2008; Co-Captain of the Glens Falls Varsity Swim Team in 2008; Member of the school record breaking 200 Free Relay team in 2008 (even though the record no longer stands); Member of the SUNY Cortland Swim Team

Q:  What are your triathlon goals for this season?

A:  Finish Ironman Lake Placid; Break 5:30 in the Eagleman and run for the entire 13 miles; Break 2:10 in the Fronhofer Tool Tri; Break 40' in a 10K

Q:  What is your long-term goal in the sport of mtn. biking/triathlon?

A:  Improve every year and qualify for Kona.

Q:  What are 3 foods someone would always find in your refrigerator/cupboards?

A:  Bagels, peanut butter, orange juice

Q:  Do you specialize in a particular mtn. biking/triathlon distance? If so, why that distance?

A:  I'd say Olympic distance because it's long enough that you need some endurance to do well, but short enough that you have adrenaline for the entire race

Q:  What advice would you give to a 'newbie' in the sport?

A:  While climbing a hill in your aerobars, DO NOT stand up. You will lose your balance and then look like a fool when you tell people why you crashed.; Always make sure that your securely locked into your trainer so that you don't crash; Be prepared. Don't be that idiot newbie who shows up to ride the Battenkill Roubaix in early April in bike shorts and a short sleeve jersey; Listen to your coach because they know a lot more than you

Q:  Do you have any secret training tips? (Not really secret if you share, huh?)

A:  Whenever possible, train with people who are better than you. That way you'll have to work harder to keep up with them and you'll improve quicker

Q:  Please list your favorite workout:

A:  Swim workout - 27 to Heaven - 27x50 on a decreasing interval starting at 1' (first one at 1', second at 59", 3rd at 58", etc). Once you miss an interval, do the remaining 50s butterfly with fins; Cycling - Long, easy rides. It's great to just ride around and enjoy the outdoors; Running-Longs runs on a beautiful day

Q:  Any thoughts you want to share?

A:  Triathlon's a great sport! Find yourself a good coach, go train until your muscles hurt too much to move, and enjoy every minute of it! "The hard is what makes it great!"
