MEET our T3 December ATHLETE of the MONTH, Kim Kilby!

Finding the right balance between family, work, hobbies and triathlon can be challenging. However, once that balance is found, the rewards are great. Kim Kilby exemplifies this! Kim is very successful in many walks of life, and the one variable that shines through on even the cloudiest days, is having fun! You will see Kim constantly smiling, yet working hard. You will hear her laughter, yet a seriousness about her goals. Always - you can tell she is enjoying the journey. Having completed an Ironman, marathon, and many other events - living a healthy lifestyle and being a role model to her family and colleagues are the greatest accomplishments I see. Congratulations Kim! Well deserved!!!

Q:  What is your name and where do you live?

A:   Kim Kilby, Niskayuna, NY

Q:  What is your age?

A:   41

Q:  What is your occupation?

A:   Physician

Q:  When did you start participating in triathlons? What motivated you to participate?

A:   2009

Q:  How long have you been coached by T3 Coaching?

A:   This is my third year with T3 and my second year being coached by Kevin :-)

Q:  What is your favorite race, and why?

A:   Although I love any race in Lake Placid, I have to say my favorite race is actually the Saratoga Lions Club Duathlon. I have done this race since 2009 and it was my first ever race involving a biking leg. I remember feeling so proud of finishing a race that wasn’t just a road run. I have changed and grown as an athlete and learned so much about multisport since that time. I can trace my progress with this race and the memories that build year to year.

Q:  What is your favorite piece of triathlon equipment?

A:   My bike! I take better care of my bike than I do my car.

Q:  What are some of your career highlights as an athlete (not necessarily triathlon)?

A:   Before triathlon, there was no athletic anything, but 2012 was a pretty good year for me. Crystal Lake Tri 2012, 1st in AG and 4th female overall; Big George 2012, 3rd in AG. And finishing my first full Ironman in 2013 of course.

Q:  What are your triathlon goals for this season?

A:   I will be doing the Maine 70.3 in August as well as some shorter distances and plan to do Lake Placid Ironman again in 2020. (Yikes! I actually shared this publicly. It’s real!).  This season, I will continue to work on my running with hopes to continue improving my paces and technique.

Q:  What is your long-term goal in the sport of mtn. biking/triathlon?

A:   Triathlon is the best thing I have found that keeps me accountable to my personal self-care but also to the values I hold in life. These include working hard, being of use, showing up, being present, and non-attachment/openness to change, with lots of self-compassion built in. I hope to be able to engage this way with the sport over my lifetime, while remaining injury free and hopefully, smiling!!

Q:  What are 3 foods someone would always find in your refrigerator/cupboards?

A:   Cottage cheese, hard boiled eggs, and avocado

Q:  What kind of music could we find on your iPod?

A:   I have a secret pop music obsession, so you will find the most recent pop singles mixed in with Ani Difranco, Queen, Guns n’ Roses, etc.

Q:  What advice would you give to a 'newbie' in the sport?

A:   Just be yourself and be patient. Showing up and just trying your best have given me my greatest lessons. And don’t be intimidated by all of the triathletes around you. Regardless of skill and performance level, they are the friendliest, most supportive group of athletes you could ever hope to be around.

Q:  Do you have any secret training tips? (Not really secret if you share, huh?)

A:   Incorporating yoga as much as I can has helped me with flexibility and strength.

Q:  Please list your favorite workout:

A:   Anything involving power intervals on the trainer. It’s really satisfying to take other variables out of the picture, and just focusing on the numbers.

Q:  Any thoughts you want to share?

A:   I have so much gratitude for being part of the T3 community. It is an honor to have Kevin Crossman as my coach. I feel supported and encouraged by him while also respected as a person with a life outside of triathlon. I also want to acknowledge my family, especially my partner Bryan and my step-son Tucker, who are my greatest cheerleaders.
