MEET our T3 May ATHLETE of the MONTH, Johan Bosman!
Q: What is your name and where do you live?
A: Johan Bosman and I live in Niskayuna, New York
Q: What is your age?
A: 49
Q: What is your occupation?
A: Minister
Q: How long have you been participating in triathlons?
A: This will be my 4th Season
Q: How long have you been coached by T3 Coaching?
A: Since January 5, 2009
Q: What is your favorite race, and why?
A: Timberman. It was my first ever triathlon. I entered it in 2006 totally unprepared. I bought triathlon clothes and a wetsuit the day before the race at the expo, tried the wetsuit for about 3 minutes in Lake Winnipesauke and felt that I was ready. Saturday was a beautiful day but when I got up the day of the race it was pouring and they had to start the race an hour late. I almost drowned during the swim and finished the 1.2 miles in 51:53. Strange thing was I was hooked and wanted to do better! The Timberman Tri-festival has since become a family event with Marie, my wife doing the 1/2 IM, and my daughter Claudette and son Gerhard doing the Sprint.
Q: What is your favorite piece of triathlon equipment?
A: My wetsuit. It makes swimming a bit easier!
Q: What are some of your career highlights as an athlete (not necessarily triathlon)?
A: I was South African Badminton singles champion four times, beat a world champion, I won an international squash tournament in Germany, ran the Berlin marathon in 2:53, ran a 75 min 1/2 Marathon, finished a 1/2 Ironman race (Tupper Lake) in 4:57 and have a PR for an IM race of 11:24.
Q: What are your triathlon goals for this season?
A: Have as much fun as possible, stay healthy, race well and qualify for Kona!
Q: What is your long-term goal in the sport of mtn. biking/triathlon?
A: To compete until I am 75. Improve my swimming and be in the top 5% of my age group
Q: What are 3 foods someone would always find in your refrigerator/cupboards?
A: Cheese, Tuna and Cucumbers.
Q: Do you specialize in a particular mtn. biking/triathlon distance? If so, why that distance?
A: Ironman distance. It is the ultimate challenge with an elusive price: Going to KONA!
Q: What advice would you give to a 'newbie' in the sport?
A: Get the right equipment and practice transitions. The combined time of T1 and T2 at my first triathlon was almost 15 min!
Q: Do you have any secret training tips? (Not really secret if you share, huh?)
A: Follow Kevin's program and advice.
Q: Please list your favorite workout:
A: One loop swim in Mirror Lake, 2 IM course loops bike ride, an hour run with good friends like Steve, Rich and Joe. Then take a dip in the lake, put on dry clothes, drink a couple (or more) beers and eat lots of food at the Brew Pup. That makes for a perfect day!
Q: Any thoughts you want to share?
A: Enjoy every workout even if it sucks – it is still better than not working out.
