MEET our T3 May ATHLETE of the MONTH, Fran Vincent!
Q: What is your name and where do you live?
A: Fran Vincent and I live in Slingerlands, NY
Q: What is your age?
A: Technically I'm 49, but my tri age is 50!
Q: What is your occupation?
A: I teach 8th grade Health Education
Q: How long have you been participating in triathlons?
A: I did a couple of sprint triathlons when I was in my mid 20's. In fact, I completed my 2nd triathlon while 3 months pregnant with my daughter! (I have a good labor story, too, but I’'ll spare the details.) After taking 19 years off from the sport, I got seriously bitten by the "tri bug" after joining the Bethlehem YMCA tri club. This will be my 5th season back in the saddle.
Q: How long have you been coached by T3 Coaching?
A: For 10 wonderful weeks!
Q: What is your favorite race, and why?
A: The Timberman 70.3 because the community support for this race is just incredible, Lake Winnipesaukee is breathtakingly beautiful, and the timing (mid August) is perfect. It also falls on my anniversary weekend, so it makes for a nice getaway. Yes, my husband IS a saint!
Q: What is your favorite piece of triathlon equipment?
A: I have a love/hate relationship with my Garmin 310XT. It frustrates me to no end, but I find the constant feedback really motivating. It also makes me look really high tech!
Q: What are some of your career highlights as an athlete (not necessarily triathlon)?
A: Participating in the Westchester Olympic Distance Triathlon for Team in Training was definitely a highlight. After my brother-in-law was stricken with Multiple Myeloma, I knew it was the one thing that I could do to help fight this deadly disease. The support and encouragement that I received with my fundraising and throughout the race was humbling AND it was my fastest 10 k... ever. Go team!
Q: What are your triathlon goals for this season?
A: I want to have fun, stay healthy, and finish my first Ironman (Lake Placid) with a HUGE smile on my face... without ending up in the medical tent.
I'd also like to continue to get faster in everything! I'm getting older, but I truly feel like I haven’t reached my full potential yet.
I'd also like to continue to get faster in everything! I'm getting older, but I truly feel like I haven’t reached my full potential yet.
Q: What is your long-term goal in the sport of mtn. biking/triathlon?
A: This is a tough one, as I don’t usually think beyond a two week block.
Q: What are 3 foods someone would always find in your refrigerator/cupboards?
A: Dark chocolate, my homemade granola, almonds, and Greek yogurt
Q: What kind of music could we find on your iPod?
A: This could be embarrassing. I listen to ALL sorts of music, from James Taylor to AC/DC. For me, there's nothing more motivating than a strategically placed song by Dropkick Murphys or Aerosmith. My new favorite training buddy is David Garrett. He’s awesome!!
Q: Do you specialize in a particular mtn. biking/triathlon distance? If so, why that distance?
A: I'll let you know after I’ve tried them all.
Q: What advice would you give to a 'newbie' in the sport?
A: Get as much open water swim experience as you possibly can before your first event.
Q: Do you have any secret training tips? (Not really secret if you share, huh?)
A: I'm really motivated by music. On days when I'm not really "feeling it", I put together a rockin' playlist. For me, it can totally change the tenor of a workout.
Q: Please list your favorite workout:
A: Power Intervals... NOT! I look forward to my long weekend rides with my tri buddies. Because most of my training is done solo, these rides provide me with the opportunity to visit with some of the most awesome people I have ever met while enjoying beautiful country landscapes.
Q: Any thoughts you want to share?
A: The people we love often make great sacrifices so that we can participate in a sport which can be very demanding of our time, energy, and finances. I want to thank my family and friends for always asking about my training and then patiently listening to the details of every workout. I know it's a labor of love. I've also been absolutely amazed with the creativity, thought and feedback that Kevin provides with each workout. Thank you for making this so much fun!
