MEET our T3 July ATHLETE of the MONTH, Jamie Hoyt!

Congratulations to Jamie Hoyt, T3’s July 2016 Athlete of the Month. Jamie has become a very competitive triathlete over the past few years and his hard work both in season and in the off season is paying off with several race wins and a recent speedy finish at Ironman Lake Placid in 10:17:38. Let’s find out more about Jamie...

Q:  What is your name and where do you live?

A:  Jamie Hoyt, Binghamton, NY

Q:  What is your age?

A:  39… For a couple of more weeks!

Q:  What is your occupation?

A:  Engineer

Q:  When did you start participating in triathlons? What motivated you to participate?

A:  This is my 8th year of participating in triathlons. It was after taking a winter trip to Lake Placid in 2008. I was at a point in my life where I was looking to make a positive lifestyle change to set a good example for my son. I was in a local bike shop there and stumbled onto a book on triathlon. I did my first sprint in the summer of 2009 and have been competing since. I am really proud that it has evolved over the years to include the entire Hoyt family. My son Aidan has been doing youth triathlons for the last several years and now my wife Kelly is competing as well. I can’t wait for the day that all three of us compete in the same event!

Q:  How long have you been coached by T3 Coaching?

A:  This is my fourth season with Kevin. I can’t say enough positive things about the experience. Not only have I achieved a level of competitiveness I never thought possible, but I’ve done it in a family centric way. I don’t know how many other coaches would give the workout ‘1 hour outside active with family, Anything but swim, bike, run’

Q:  What is your favorite race, and why?

A:  I have two. IMLP will always be a special race for me. There is just something special about Lake Placid on race day. The other is our local Broome County Sprint Triathlon. I love having my whole family there for a race.

Q:  What is your favorite piece of triathlon equipment?

A:  That’s easy…My bike Veronica, or as Kelly says ‘the other woman in my life!’

Q:  What are some of your career highlights as an athlete (not necessarily triathlon)?

A:  * OA winner Broome County Sprint Triathlon 2015/2016
* OA winner Cortland Sprint Triathlon 2014/2015
* Qualifying and competing in 2015 70.3 WC
* 4x IM
* ‘Pace-Dad’ for several 5Ks with Aidan over the past few years!

Q:  You have competed at the 2015 70.3 World Championship in Zell am See, Austria. Describe your experience there.

A:  It was an amazing experience. The race course was set in a beautiful part of Austria. I felt like I was riding in the TDF on the bike course….climbs in the Alps, crazy descents, town centers with cobblestones, tunnels, etc… At the same time it was humbling. There were a lot of very strong athletes at the race!

Q:  What are your triathlon goals for this season?

A:  My goals for 2016 were to finish in the AG top 10 in IMLP and IM North Carolina and be on the podium for the local sprint races. So far I won the Broome County Triathlon and finished 8th in my AG for IMLP.

Q:  What is your long-term goal in the sport of mtn. biking/triathlon?

A:  My long term triathlon goal is to qualify for Kona slot.My long term triathlon goal is to qualify for Kona slot.

Q:  What are 3 foods someone would always find in your refrigerator/cupboards?

A:  Rice, Peanut Butter (natural with no sugar added), dark chocolate

Q:  What kind of music could we find on your iPod?

A:  I love Irish Music like Flogging Molly, especially for hard workouts. It has an ‘edge’ to it and a fast cadence.

Q:  What advice would you give to a 'newbie' in the sport?

A:  Enjoy every first. First race at any distance, first breakthrough workout, etc.

Q:  Do you have any secret training tips? (Not really secret if you share, huh?)

A:  My secret training tip is that in addition to Kevin I have a dedicated transition coach. Early on Kevin suggested I dedicate some time practicing transitions. Before a race I asked my 11 year old son Aidan to join me for transition practice. Ever since we practice transitions together. More than once he has said “hey dad, at the last race I saw a guy do this in transition, I think it would make you faster”. Often he’s right! Either way it’s a fun thing for us to do together.

Q:  Please list your favorite workout:

A:  During the winter Kevin gives me ‘power goal workouts’ for the bike. The game is to break my personal best for average power at various time intervals. My competitive side takes over for these workouts. It’s sad but I often start thinking about these days ahead of time when I see them in TP!

Q:  Any thoughts you want to share?

A:  One of the things I appreciate about T3 is the emphasis on being a good ‘triathlon citizen’. When triathletes do negative things (not obey traffic rules on bike, litter, treat race volunteers poorly, etc) it reflects badly on all of us. I would love to see more AG athletes and team to focus on this aspect of the sport.
