MEET our T3 October ATHLETE of the MONTH, Jess Corwin!

For some triathletes, the training load results in a lot of time away from friends and loved ones. Not for Jess Corwin, whose support group runs, rides, and celebrates with her. Jess faithfully put in the work, had a great time doing it, and took more than 2 hours off her Ironman PR at Mont Tremblant, Quebec. Yes, you read that right, 2 hours! Congratulations to the T3 October Athlete of the Month, Jess Corwin!

Q:  What is your name and where do you live?

A:   Jess Corwin, South Glens Falls

Q:  What is your age?

A:   33

Q:  What is your occupation?

A:   Special Education Teacher- 6th grade math!

Q:  When did you start participating in triathlons? What motivated you to participate?

A:   I did my first Triathlon in 2015!

Q:  How long have you been coached by T3 Coaching?

A:   This was my rookie season with Coach Carl and T3!

Q:  What is your favorite race, and why?

A:   Ironman Mont Tremblant… it was an amazing experience from start to finish. Mont Tremblant puts on an amazing show, dinner and fireworks on Friday which really pumps you up for the race. As far as the actual race, the swim was great.. and one loop which I loved! The bike was challenging but beautiful.. and the run was well supported. Being able to run through a village lined with supporters treating you like a rockstar as you run toward the red carpet was one of the most amazing experiences of my life.

Q:  What is your favorite piece of triathlon equipment?

A:   My bike of course!

Q:  What are some of your career highlights as an athlete (not necessarily triathlon)?

A:   I was a collegiate competitive cheerleader and won a Division II National title in 2007. My college cheerleading team is being inducted into my college’s Athletic Hall of Fame this year!

Q:  What are your triathlon goals for this season?

A:   My goal for this season was to finish Mont Tremblant in a better place physically and mentally than I did the previous year in Lake Placid.. and improve my time of course! Happy to report that I finished with the biggest smile possible and was able to PR my previous Ironman time by over 2 hours!

Q:  What is your long-term goal in the sport of mtn. biking/triathlon?

A:   My long term goals in Triathlon include becoming faster and stronger… especially in the run!

Q:  What are 3 foods someone would always find in your refrigerator/cupboards?

A:   Anyone who knows me well, knows that I don’t cook much at all! I do have a variety of beverages in my fridge including diet coke, chocolate milk and water! I do like to keep ice cream cookie sandwiches in my freezer!

Q:  What kind of music could we find on your iPod?

A:   Lots of random things.. soundtracks to The Greatest Showman and Wicked as well as Train’s greatest hits!

Q:  What advice would you give to a 'newbie' in the sport?

A:   Have fun with your training. Depending on what distance you’re training for, chances are you’re giving up a lot of time to prepare yourself for that race. You don’t want to be miserable while you are preparing!

Q:  Do you have any secret training tips? (Not really secret if you share, huh?)

A:   Involving my friends has truly made my training and racing experiences some of the best ever. Having someone to run with on cold March days or to keep me company on 5 hour rides has helped keep me motivated and engaged in my workouts. I also like to integrate other types of workouts and activities in the offseason when possible.. like snowshoe running in the winter and mountain biking in the fall.

Q:  Please list your favorite workout:

A:   Any of the speed interval workouts I did on my bike.. one of the examples coming to mind involved 1’ maxed effort, 4’ recovery (repeated 10 times).

Q:  Any thoughts you want to share?

A:    I feel very lucky to have been able to be a part of something as amazing as T3. The people that I’ve met this year have inspired me and motivated me more than words can say. I look forward to continuing to work with Coach Carl and slay more goals in the future!
