MEET our T3 August ATHLETE of the MONTH, Scott Ferris!

Coach Jodi says, "When I first met Scott in February, his enthusiasm for training for his debut Ironman was immediately apparent. Referred to T3 Coaching by a friend, Scott sought structured guidance to prepare for the challenge of Lake Placid. Throughout our time together, Scott consistently demonstrated a remarkable commitment to following his training plan, embracing the core advice I give to all my athletes: “listen to your body.” Whenever questions or concerns arose, Scott was proactive in reaching out, whether by call or text, which greatly facilitated necessary adjustments and fine-tuning during his preparation.

Scott’s communication skills and positive attitude stood out, especially on race day, where his optimism was evident every time I saw him on the course. Over the five months we worked together, Scott made tremendous progress, showing dedication and perseverance each day. As his coach, I am genuinely proud of the hard work and determination Scott displayed in pursuit of his goal, culminating in a well-earned Ironman finish."

Q:  What is your name and where do you live?

A:   Scott Ferris – Ballston Spa, New York

Q:  What is your age?

A:   38 (but 36.5 according to Garmin!)

Q:  What is your occupation?

A:   Key Account Director at Saratoga Eagle

Q:  How long have you been participating in triathlons?

A:   Just over 2 years

Q:  How long have you been coached by T3 Coaching?

A:   Coached by Jodi Plante since February of 2026 – a couple days after I signed up for IMLP.

Q:  What is your favorite race, and why?

A:   Ironman Lake Placid for a multitude of reasons. Lake Placid has always been a special place for myself and my family – and deciding to compete in Ironman Lake Placid as my first full Ironman was a pretty lofty goal that I was able to accomplish.

Q:  What is your favorite piece of triathlon equipment?

A:   Absolutely my Garmin watch. I used a Fenix 7 for training leading up to IMLP which conveniently stopped working 3 days before the race (that wasn’t fun!) – so now it is a Fenix 8!

Q:  What are some of your career highlights as an athlete (not necessarily triathlon)?

A:   I have never previously really considered myself an “athlete” until some of my friends (shout out Brody and Frank!) got me into Triathlon. Completing Ironman Lake Placid is certainly the career highlight to this point as an athlete.

Q:  What are your triathlon goals for this season?

A:   Triathlon goals are accomplished for the season! My #1 goal was to complete Ironman Lake Placid safely and I did so just under the wire at 16 hours and 38 minutes. I am now looking forward to the New York City Marathon on November 1st where I’ll be on Team Michelob Ultra and spending more weekends with my wife and kids.

Q:  What is your long-term goal in the sport of mtn. biking/triathlon?

A:   I don’t have any specific long-term goals in triathlon aside from continuing in the sport, likely in the form of Olympic and 70.3 distance events. My Mom passed away from cancer 4 years ago this year and to that date the longest event I had participated in was a single 5K. A couple of years later I decided to do Ironman 70.3 Musselman as a challenge but to also to improve my health and help to set an example for our kids of how important an active lifestyle is.

Q:  What are 3 foods someone would always find in your refrigerator/cupboards?

A:   Tart cherry juice (excellent for sleep and recovery), Mike & Ike candy of some variety and beer (Michelob Ultra or Common Roots Good Fortune most likely!)

Q:  What kind of music could we find on your playlist

A:   I listen to a wide variety of music but during IMLP training I ended nearly every workout with Sia’s “Unstoppable”.

Q:  What advice would you give to a 'newbie' in the sport?

A:   Get a Coach! I had not used a personal Coach during my previous Triathlon experiences but I knew that if I wanted to successfully (and safely) complete Ironman Lake Placid I would need the structure, support and accountability of a Coach. I feel this decision early on made all the difference in the world and allowed me the best opportunity to cross the finish line in Lake Placid as an Ironman many months later. Special shoutout to my T3 Coach Jodi Plante and Swim Coach Gary Crossman! Along with many others who helped along the way including Coach Kevin, Dennie, Chris and Mickey.

Q:  Do you have any secret training tips? (Not really secret if you share, huh?)

A:   Be a sponge for information – ask questions, read Triathlon books, watch swim technique videos etc.

Q:  Please list your favorite workout:

A:   40 mile ride at the Saratoga Battlefields in the (very) early early morning (5AM or so) during the summer. Incredible place to watch the sunrise and get some early morning miles in.

Q:  Any thoughts you want to share?

A:   Don’t be afraid to dream big – signing up for Ironman Lake Placid was scary! But if you do decide to and are like me with a spouse and young children, make sure your significant other understands the time commitment that goes into the training for an Ironman before signing up. My wife (Hey Katie!) was absolutely instrumental in my success at Lake Placid by supporting me and taking care of the kids when I had a late night swim during the week or a 6 hour brick workout during the weekend and I am forever grateful. Thank you also to all of my T3 Coaches and Teammates for welcoming and supporting me this year!
