MEET our T3 July ATHLETE of the MONTH, Bob Stocks!
Q: What is your name and where do you live?
A: My name is Bob Stocks and I live in Vestal, NY.
Q: What is your age?
A: Real age is 58. Garmin says my fitness age is 49 but I feel 35 and sometimes act like I'm 26.
Q: What is your occupation?
A: I have been a Nuclear Medicine Technologist for 20+ years.
Q: How long have you been coached by T3 Coaching?
A: I found Kevin back in 2006 in the early days of T3 and have been coached by him ever since. I've had multiple 30 to 60 lb weight gains and losses over the years and each time I came down the weight ladder Kevin and T3 got me SAFELY back in shape to race.
The most memorable and impressive was contacting him after a number of years off to where I was an unrecognizable 235 lbs and had dropped almost 50 lbs. I was already signed up for Placid and deferred due to covid years and not training but had planned on going just to get a swim and 1 loop of the course done to get my swag. In 7 weeks he safely got me to that start line and I have never had so much fun in an IM as I did at the 2022 IMLP! #T3Proud

Q: What is your favorite race, and why?
A: This is a tough one. IMWI holds a special place since it was my first IM and despite a back injury I had some great memories. My T3 family has made IMLP a favorite due to the support and camaraderie but I would have to say that the Fly by Night Duathlon in Watkins Glen is my favorite because riding around that race track is a blast and I do like to have fun!!
Q: What is your favorite piece of triathlon equipment?
A: I would have to say my Garmin watch and all of the accessories that feed it information. It's always fun to look at the data after the workout and sometimes I'm glued to the watch during the workout.
Q: What are some of your career highlights as an athlete (not necessarily triathlon)?
A: Hmmmmm. My main sport from the time I was 4 or 5 yrs old through college was swimming but played a lot of different sports along the way. I was good in many sports but not great in any. That being said I have learned to have fun and bring fun to most everything I get involved in, I guess that's a highlight.
Q: What are your triathlon goals for this season?
A: Goal for this season is to hope that I have outlived enough of my competition that at IMLP I can make it to Kona to participate. Trip is booked so it's a question of whether I will be volunteering or participating.
Q: What is your long-term goal in the sport of mtn. biking/triathlon?
A: I have already reached my long term goal of staying active so I can continue to enjoy the sport that has brought so many people from all over the country and the world into my life.
Q: What are 3 foods someone would always find in your refrigerator/cupboards?
A: Bananas, peanut butter and oatmeal
Q: What advice would you give to a 'newbie' in the sport?
A: Keep things in perspective and have fun. Consistency is the key to success and overtraining is the road to injury. If you are being coached, embrace the easy workouts and rest days and work hard when asked to work hard. I think one of the first things Kevin did when I started with T3 was take almost 10 hrs of training out of what I was doing to spend time with family and recover.
Q: Do you have any secret training tips? (Not really secret if you share, huh?)
A: Be consistent and don't over do. Training partners or group rides and runs are wonderful and help with accountability on everyone's part. So much of our training as triathletes are alone on a trainer or getting out early or late squeezing workouts in when you can that when you get a chance to train with a group embrace it. I have said for years that my best workouts are when I push myself alone but the most memorable workouts are the ones that are with friends no matter what speed or level they are.
Q: Please list your favorite workout:
A: Since I have gotten "old", Z1 recovery rides and runs are a favorite. As far as a training workout I think the 6-6-6 threshold run is a favorite. (3 x 6' strong-6' ez jog)
Q: Any thoughts you want to share?
A: T3 has been such a positive influence on my life over the past 18 years and I am grateful to call the Crossmans and the entire T3 family lifelong friends. T3 stands out at every race for not only having the best kits on the planet bit for being stewards of the sport and planet!! I am proud to be a part of it!!
